BITTERSWEET TALE OF
POST-WAR BRITAIN
|
SMALL
ISLAND By Andrea Levy
BlackInBritain rates SMALL
ISLAND 8/10
SMALL ISLAND won Andrea
Levy the Whitbread Book of the Year award and the Orange
Prize for Fiction. It also catapulted her to literary stardom and
rightly so.
It tells the tale, from various perspectives, of the lives of a
few Caribbean people
settling in post-war Britain, from frosty
welcomes to hopes dashed. It explores this through the eyes of characters
such as RAF
veteran Gilbert and his self-seeking wife Hortense and their landlady
Queenie.
All Levy's characters are convincing and the story and backdrop are
engaging. The author allows you to hear the characters and understand
their very inner selves. Without a doubt, you'll love some character,
hate others and be shocked by a reality shrouded in the creativity of
fiction.
What Levy achieves is providing a window into the world of a lost
generation, or at least a generation whose experiences are lost on
many of today's young Black Brits. Those are the experiences of our
grandparents and great grandparents and while amusing in some place,
it saddens in others.
This is a must read for anyone who has every treated the Windrush
generation with any level of incredulity. This very little-explored
episode in British history is fascinating and in this form is nothing
short of brilliant. Buy this
